Polyester is a synthetic fiber. Unlike cotton and other natural fibers, it is more stable and guarantees availability, as it is not affected by external factors such as weather, pests, etc. Currently, synthetic fibers are the most widely used in the market with approximately 65% of world production compared to 35% of natural fibers (TextileExchange) and polyester is the most widely used of all those synthetic fibers. In the textile industry it is known as PET, polyethylene terephthalate or commonly known as "poly" or "polyester"
There are two main types: original and Recycled (rPET), which is created from recycled plastic bottles either mechanically or chemically.
Today, the mechanical recycling process is the one used primarily in the textile and clothing industry. As the graph illustrates, this means that we take a plastic bottle, break it up, melt it, and turn it into fiber. In parallel, a lot of research is being done on the chemical recycling of polyester, and in the future we could see more possibilities for the recycled material to get into different fabrics.
Therefore, polyester is a sustainable fiber, as it helps keep bottles and plastic out of landfills and oceans. In Spain, most of the recycled polyester comes from the mechanical recycling of ocean plastic. Studies also show that the amount of energy required to make rPET is much less than that required to make original polyester. Another factor to consider when selecting polyester over other types of fibers, such as cotton, for example, is that it does not require the use of pesticides.
Sustainable fashion is a term we are getting used to as consumers become eco-conscious. Sportswear makes up the bulk of the outfit that is created with polyester fiber. Athleisure, the sportswear that is worn when not practicing sport, but for pleasure or as fashion, is also made from polyester. Another common feature for both types of this outfit is customization.
Heat transfer, Screen printing, Sublimation and Electronic transfers printing are the current printing technologies of polyester printing.
Sublimation - Best for complex designs on white polyester. It offers glossy, high-quality prints, but only on white polyester. Printing on dark colored polyester fabrics is not possible with sublimation printing. In fact, that limits the type of garment and the variations that can be printed with this method.
